Young Black Scholars does it again!
National African American Challenge Bowl Competition 2001

Students of the Young Black Scholars program, (an educational activity of the 100 Black Men of Los Angeles), participated in the 100 Black Men of America's National African American Challenge Bowl Competition held in Atlanta, Georgia. In its seventh year, the competition is designed to test the knowledge of students in African American History. East Middle School in Downey (consisting of Michael Williams, Eugene Cherrington, Alexandra Beemer, & La Varr Funches) was chosen as the Junior Division team and Long Beach Polytechnic (consisting of Kevin Estwick, Makeda Robinson & Leslie Schnyder) was chosen as the Senior Division team to represent the Los Angeles Chapter of the 100 Black Men after winning the local Competition hosted by Young Black Scholars in February. The team was responsible for answering a barrage of questions related to African and African American History. East Middle School defeated more than 10 other teams who represented various other states, Long Beach Polytechnic received 2nd place in the Senior Division. Congratulations to 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, Young Black Scholars, East Middle School & Long Beach Polytechnic HS.

The Young Black Scholars (YBS) Program is a youth focused educational activity of the 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, Inc. It is a pioneer in academic intervention. YBS is active in more than 170 high schools in Southern California and has had graduates accepted at over 110 colleges and universities across the nation.
