YOUNG BLACK SCHOLARS WIN 100 BLACK MEN OF AMERICA CHALLENGE BOWL
LOS ANGELES, CA June 15, 2000:
Young Black Scholars does it again! Students of the Young Black
Scholars program, (an educational activity of the 100 Black Men
of Los Angeles), participated in the 100 Black Men of America’s
National African American Challenge Bowl Competition held in East
Rutherford, New Jersey. In its sixth year, the competition is
designed as to test the knowledge of students in African American
History. St. Bernard HS (consisting of Kevin Eddington, Brian
Hammons, Lisa Harris, Desiree Cormier and Connie Cotton) was chosen
as the team to represent the Los Angeles Chapter of the 100 Black
Men after winning the local Competition hosted by Young Black
Scholars in February. The team was responsible for answering a
barrage of questions related to African and African American History.
The team defeated more than 15 other teams who represented various
other states. The competing members of the team (Kevin & Brian)
will both receive $5,000 college scholarships.
Congratulations
to 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, Young Black Scholars & St.
Bernard’s High School for winning the 100 Black Men National Competition
for the fourth time. The Young Black Scholars (YBS) Program
is a youth focused educational activity of the 100 Black Men of
Los Angeles, Inc.It is a pioneer in academic intervention.YBS
is active in more than 170 high schools in Southern California
and has had graduates accepted at over 110 colleges and universities
across the nation.
YBS maintains a non-profit status and is always in need of donations,
