Supported and operated as an educational activity of the 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, Inc., Young Black Scholars is a comprehensive college preparatory program for college-bound high school students.

The program brings together some of the best and brightest high school students to participate in more than 40 workshops, programs, seminars, and conferences throughout the academic school year.

The workshops and one-on-one activities help scholars and parents prepare for college admissions, selection, and continued success. Since 1986, YBS has assisted more than 21,000 students realize their dreams of attending college.

How does YBS prepare students for college admission?

In collaboration with colleges and universities, Young Black Scholars offers more than 40 academic learning support workshops and conferences.

These activities are held on Saturdays and take place on college campuses throughout Southern California. The workshops address a wide range of topics including study and writing skills, completing college applications, PSAT and SAT preparation, campus open houses, and various health and wellness subjects. »

What are the application requirements?

Students must be entering in ninth through twelfth grade with a minimum GPA of 3.0. They must submit a completed application, a copy of their latest transcript, and the assessment/academic series fee.

How much is the assessment/academic series fee?

The annual assessment/academic series fee is $300 per student (or $570 per year for a family with two students). The fees include student registration and cover the cost for students to participate in the 40+ workshops offered during the academic year.

Where can students sign up for the program?

Students can download an application from this web site and return it to our office by mail or in person.

Students also can visit the office in-person to pick up an application.

Do the students need transportation to the workshops?

Yes. It is the responsibility of the parent to provide transportation to and from the workshops. If a bus is provided, it is the responsibility of the parent to provide transportation to and from the drop-off points.

Do students need any materials for the workshops?

Generally, all a student needs for a workshop is a pen or pencil and paper to take notes. If the workshops are specific (i.e. college application workshops, academic advising, etc.), the students may need additional materials as noted on the event flyer.

All students are required to adhere to the business casual dress code. Cell phones and electronic devices are not allowed at the workshops.

Does Young Black Scholars offer homework help or tutoring?

YBS does not offering tutoring, but we do provide referrals to tutoring programs and services in the Los Angeles area upon request.

Does Young Black Scholars offer help with scholarships?

Young Black Scholars is not a scholarship program. Program participants, however, will be notified of scholarship information that comes through the YBS office, including those offered by colleges and universities as well as the 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, the organization that founded YBS.

Is there a Young Black Scholars program located in any other city?

As of now, YBS is only available in Southern California. The corporate office of Young Black Scholars is located at 3701 Stocker Street #309, Los Angeles, CA 90008.
